To renew your certification through a program of continuing education, you must have completed 80 clock hours of approved continuing education that includes a minimum of 30 hours in the focus areas shown in this guide, a minimum of 4 hours in ethics, and a maximum of 40 hours in the area of professional development.

Professional development is an option, not a requirement.

Provide documentation indicating that you have completed 80 clock hours of approved continuing education, of which 4 hours must be in ethics.

To ensure that CDMSs maintain their knowledge, skills, and abilities in the field, CDMSC requires that a minimum of 30 of the 80 hours be taken in the focus areas that are found on the certification examination and which are continually validated through ongoing role and function studies. The focus areas are listed in this section.

Focus Areas (Domains): The continuing education needed to maintain CDMS status must be in one of the following focus areas:

  • Disability Case Management
  • Psychosocial Intervention
  • Vocational Aspects of Disability
  • Managed Care and Disability Management Concepts
  • Business Knowledge Related to Disability Management

Occupational health case management is unique in that it focuses on the mutually beneficial relationship between the employee and the employer. Certified occupational health nurses routinely communicate with employees, employers, health care providers and others to modify work tasks to accommodate changes in health status. Certified occupational health nurses are involved in direct care and / or refer to a full range of qualified health care specialists, while maintaining a perspective on the best care at the right time, by the right provider, and delivered at an appropriate cost. All of these activities are role functions of occupational health case managers.

This certification program is one means to demonstrate expertise in the area of occupational health nursing case management.

COHN or COHN-S certification is required as a prerequisite for this case management credential.

The credential awarded is COHN / CM or COHN-S / CM. Only those nurses who have met all of the criteria (have been successful on the examination and are in Active Status with ABOHN) are entitled to use this credential.
