I frequently work as a Hospital Discharge Planner and I find myself frustrated and distressed over some of these most problematic cases. I know that some of my reaction has to do with my "beliefs" and yet some of it has to do with true "ethical dilemmas". Recently, a group of us started discussing how we should best handle "illegal aliens" who present to our hospital and needed some kind of specialized follow up care i.e. dialysis, lovenox injections, IV Antibiotics, etc...We also got into a discussion about the number of Illegal Aliens presenting to the hospital who were pregnant with their fourth, fifth or sixth child. I would appreciate hearing your opinions, beliefs, and experiences as they relate to providing ongoing resources for a population who has no insurance, no access to Medicare/Medicaid and little money.

This is beginning to be a problem in our facility too. We are a non-profit facility...so we cannot turn anyone away. Charity applications are being utilized. Something that frustrates me is arranging for some charitable items, ie, meds from a downtown clinic....and then noticing pt and his family utilizing cell phones in the room while hospitalized!! They have $$$ for this? Hmmm. No answers here...but searching also!

Sue: When I traveled to Hawaii I used a cell phone only because the cost was so high for a regular phone/deposits/etc. I see that same reality for many of our facility's low income, rural, or illegal immigrant families. aj

Ahhh, hadn't thought about that, AJ. Guess that is something to consider.
